“We’ll Meet Again” - Meet the Guernsey evacuees who fled their island in June 1940, and found safety in Northern England. An interactive event for all the family. Admission free

Watch our film screenings, meet the Guernsey evacuees to hear their stories, and see their wartime documents and photographs,
Peep inside a Guernsey evacuee’s suitcase;
Children can take part in a ‘Guernsey Evacuation Ship’ activity, and write a Red Cross message
Listen to Britain’s best George Formby lookalike singer,
Share your own wartime memories with Stockport Heritage Trust, over free tea and biscuits

“Meet the Past”: an evacuee storytelling event
Saturday 27th August – 1pm -3pm
A unique opportunity to meet and talk to real World War 2 evacuees who came from the Island of Guernsey to the North West. This special event includes a hands on activity for all ages where you can look through a child evacuee’s suitcase from the period. In addition you can take a look at original documents and watch a short film before meeting the Guernsey evacuees. You will have the chance to hear their stories, ask questions and see their own photographs from the time. An exciting and original occasion for everyone, this one off experience is a must for anyone interested in the social history of the period, local history and wartime memories.

Guernsey Ambassador Award

Guernsey evacuee Joan Ozanne, and I, were jointly named Guernsey’s Ambassadors of the Year on 4th February 2011 – for our work on the Guernsey Evacuation of June 1940. What an honour!

Guernsey Evacuees, BBC1, 6th Dec. at 7.30pm

Part of BBC North West’s ‘Inside Out’ programme on Mon 6 December, 7.30pm, told the story of a young Guernsey evacuee, Paulette Le Mescam who came to Cheshire in June 1940, and found comfort from an extraordinary transatlantic penpal – Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt. It was also shown on the Channel Islands via BBC1′s ‘Inside Out South West’ programme at 7.30pm on the same date. I have greatly enjoyed working with Peter Trollope at BBC Manchester on this programme. You can see a clip at:

Thanks to everyone who attended the Project Open Day at Ramsbottom Heritage Gallery and watched a preview of our documentary film, met our evacuees and shared their memories with us. The documentary will be finalised in late 2010 and details on how to obtain a copy will be shown here at that time.
